The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee held a contest to select the official mascots for the 2020 Olympic Games. The mascots were selected by children from primary schools in Japan.

The initial design of the official emblem for the Olympic Games 2020 was revealed on July 24, 2015. The logo resembled a stylized T. A red circle in the upper right corner represented a beating heart, the flag of Japan, and an "inclusive world in which everyone accepts the other." After an accusation of plagiarism of the initial logo, Yoichi Masuzoe, the governor of Tokyo, announced that the logo designed by Kenjiro Sano would be discarded.
